WiFi GPS

I spend so much time talking about VoIP killer apps, I figured I would share some info on a WiFi killer app with you. Large enterprises need to track all sorts of things and this is a way for them to inexpensively (relatively anyway) achieve this goal.

Ekahau Announces New Wi-Fi Tag and Positioning Engine Versions

Ekahau Positioning Engine 3.1 calculates more locations per second and supports Ekahau's new T201 Wi-Fi location tag.

Dallas, TX - March 2nd, 2005 - Ekahau, Inc., the leading provider of accurate Wi-Fi positioning solutions and site survey tools, today announced the general availability of the Ekahau Positioning Engine version 3.1, and the second generation Wi-Fi Location-tracking Tag T201.

With these new enhancements, Ekahau can now provide large enterprises a turnkey Wi-Fi RTLS (Real Time Location System) solution, with industry leading accuracy, performance and reliability. The Ekahau RTLS system can be deployed over any standard Wi-Fi network and provides real-time location information of mobile enterprise resources, assets and people.

Large enterprises adopting Wi-Fi for data and voice purposes are creating a natural enabling infrastructure for Ekahau's RTLS solution.

Unlike competing location-tracking systems, Ekahau technology can be easily deployed wherever there is Wi-Fi coverage, without disrupting the facility's daily operation. Especially in the healthcare environment, users are finding that people and asset tracking systems increase productivity and reduce bottlenecks while improving the overall quality of patient care.

"Our customers are looking for ways to deploy asset and people tracking solutions in the fastest and the most cost-efficient manner. These new releases of the Ekahau Positioning Engine and Wi-Fi Tag have substantially improved performance characteristics allowing Ekahau to continue increasing it's market leader role. The solution is easy to deploy and operate. It can begin generating an ROI within weeks of the deployment decision," said Mr. Arttu Huhtiniemi, Director of Product Management, Ekahau, Inc. "The underlying core benefit allows companies to incorporate location information into their existing Wi-Fi infrastructure, seamlessly integrating data, voice and location tracking over one standard infrastructure"

The Ekahau Positioning Engine version 3.1 has been upgraded to support Ekahau's next generation T201 Wi-Fi Tag along with a host of other Wi-Fi enabled devices. It also includes several new improvements, such as multiprocessor support for increased performance for tracking thousands of mobile devices per server, improved algorithms for multi-story and campus wide deployments, as well as a series of new features that improve system deployment and operations.

The new T201 tag has a new smaller design, longer battery life and is smaller in size than its predecessor. It supports Over-The-Air (OTA) configuration over the Wi-Fi network, has a buzzer, LED signaling and a call button for commissioning and decommissioning as well as location-based alarming, for personnel and security use. Ekahau will be showcasing both new products at the RFID World Conference and Exhibition in Dallas on March 2nd and 3rd.
